Charlie Witte Byron was an English circus clown entertaining in Fort Worth “Hell’s Half Acre” in 1894 when he was drawn to the music from the Union Gospel Mission nearby. There he met his future wife, Ashley Atwell. He never returned to the circus and went on to become a Methodist Circuit rider. They bought the 85-acre homestead in 1902 on which this 1893 log cabin resides. He planted three walnut trees around the cabin, which survive today, to remind him of his native England. One of their daughters, Miriam, lived here until shortly before her death at age 100 in 1997. Byron is credited with the song “Diamond in the Rough” performed by several country-western singers.
